ART 45:
Course Description

The main objective behind this course is to prepare serious art students for a continued education in the field. In this Art 45 course, students are challenged to find their own artistic voices and are pushed to work harder than they ever have before in art. Through critique, discussion, lecture, and artistic creation, the students will learn to question the very nature and purpose of art. It is our goal that students learn to lose preconceived notions of "art",  and re-define them in terms of their own expression.

Art Making
This is an independent learning environment where assignments are open-ended enough to promote unbridled creative freedom. From the minute the students walk into the classroom, they are encouraged to investigate meaningful concepts in the work that they make. The work load is heavy, and the expectations are high.

Critique
A major component of the Art 45 curriculum is art criticism. At DRHSART, we use a variety of critique methods that include individual, small group, and full class discussions about the work.

Portfolio
Each student of this course is expected to create an online portfolio of his or her work before the end of the year. This will be an on-going project the entire school year. Students should have completed their college admissions portfolio by the end of Novemeber, and the AP Studio Art portfolio ( if the student chooses to complete one) must be completed by the beginning of May. It is expected, but not mandatory that students also create a portfolio of their work to be submitted to the National Scholastics Art and Writing Competition by the first week of January..

Art History
The final element of this course is art history. Understanding the history of art is essential to making successful art in the present. In this class, we will spend a great deal of time learning about the history of art through a variety of activities, lectures, and research journaling.
