A major change in direction is on the horizon, and I couldn’t be more excited to see how it unfolds. Just last week, Lenny Pritchard demonstrated that he is a 21st Century educational leader, by approving a new course in the Art program. This course stands to attract an entirely new type of artist, as it will be an advanced course in the arts that does not require any pre-requisite courses.

Rather than limiting an advanced art course to those who have taken the required sequence of courses prior, this one will be open to any student with technical skill, passion, drive, focus, and an interest in contributing to the future of Deep Run High School. In this full-year course, selected students will participate in a new art world trend called an “Artist Collective”. This course will bring together a group of 21 stellar students who believe in the power of collaboration and contribution more than the preservation of self.

Good ideas rarely happen in in those “Eureka!” moments (that moment of “Ah, I found it”). This particular idea is the culmination of twelve years of teaching, fifteen years of professional art exhibition, eight years of coaching, three years of branding and running a small business, five years of being a parent, and 37 years of being alive. It took the collision of all my experiences to produce this model for a class that is likely to change our community’s view on the importance of art in education.

A meeting will take place during extended study for all students interested in being a part of Collective Twenty-One. During the meeting, I will discuss the details of the course, and discuss the manner in which tryouts will be conducted. Stay tuned for more information.

ATTENTION ART CLUB
Sam Leghart led a successful figure drawing session on Monday, November 19th.  Mary Clanton was the model for the session while Sam kept track of the time for the poses and taught the group some tips about proportion and expression.  Be sure to check the Art Club calendar and these announcements for the next figure drawing class.  These sessions are a great way to improve your observational skills and enhance your online portfolio.

Alessandra Torres, who gained her under-graduate degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and her Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture from VCU (VCUARTS), spoke at Deep Run High School today.  She began her presentation with a detailed account of why and how she created her recent work.  After her artist's talk, she dove into an incredibly thorough and detailed presentation about the many courses of study available at MICA.  Most importantly, Alessandra offered to stay through her lunch to review the many DRHSART students who wanted to hear her thoughts.  Her passion was infectious and left a permanent mark on those students lucky enough to have an individual meeting.  We cannot thank her enough for her knowledge, generosity, and enthusiasm.  She brought an excellent branding campaign for the programs at MICA.
