Summer Work for Rising Art 4 and Art 5 students

6/4/2019

3 Works of Art
This summer, you will be required to create a minimum of 3 works of art that are all connected by either the medium, theme, or style.  There is no minimum or maximum scale of your work, nor are there any limitations on the media used.  The only requirement is that you are invested into the work, and that you are proud to exhibit it in September.

Artist Statement
You are also required to write an artist’s statement about the work that you have created. That statement must be well-written, and posted on your site before the first day of school.  As you begin to think about your work this summer, consider building off of what worked well for you last year.

Upon our return to school, your work will be photographed, and added to your website.

(It is recommended that you look to some of the top achieving students from the past to get an idea of how they wrote their artist statements)

Get Started Early
Please do not wait until the last two weeks of summer to get started. Those of you who take this seriously, and work hard to create conceptually and aesthetically sound works, will be much better prepared for the Scholastics Competition in December.

Your Work Will Be On Display
When we return from the summer break, we will jump right into the critique of the work you created over the summer. Do not think of this summer work as something that is meant to keep you busy. Instead, think of this work as a competition for a juried exhibition that will take place upon your return to school.  All students will be showcased in the exhibition, and this will be the first impression for many of the rising Freshman into the DRHSART program.

Instagram Contest Sponsored by DRHSART

Instamadness 2018
Theme is WATER
Each March, the DRHSART program takes advantage of Social Media, and host a school-wide Instagram contest.  Posters are put up around the school with information and QR codes that take students directly to the Instagram ad for the contest.  The students are given three weeks to submit work by tagging  their Instagram images with our given theme that year.  Once submitted, the Art and Photography departments combine forces to jury the hundreds of images that are entered.

To make the contest even more interesting and relevant, we have modeled our competition after the March Madness tournament. The top 64 images from all of the entries are chosen and ranked according to their “seed” in the tournament.  Then, an interactive bracket that models the NCAA tournament is created and kept up to date each day.

The theme for 2018 was chosen by students in a poll, and the theme that was most desired is "WATER".  So, get your phones out, and start noticing your environment. Submit your photos to the contest by tagging them with

#instamadnesss18

Interactive bracket begins on March 15th
Students are limited to four posts, and the final day to enter is March 10th. We will post the winning image on all of our social media sites (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter), and a special banner will be designed for the official DRHSART site to promote the contest winner's IG feed. We will also print, frame, and display the elite 8 images, and will provide a special award to the winning photo.

How Big Is Your Game?   Schoology Adds Levels to DRHSART

DRHSART LEVEL SYSTEM

What Level Can You Reach?

The 2016-2017 School year introduced a new learning platform for Henrico County Public Schools called "Schoology". This new platform, with its many tools, provides a number of benefits to the students of our county.  The platform even has a built in badge system that allows teacher to treat the classroom as a video game-like experience in which students can achieve a variety of icons that represent the levels of achievement within specific programs.

When we saw the potential of these new features, we decided to invented a level system  to help students identify and understand the values and achievements possible among high school artists.   Many of these levels are unique to our program, but some are universal among high school art programs.

As we began to develop these iconographic levels, we organized them into a hierarchy of most difficult and easiest to achieve.  Our hope is to inform students of the possible achievement levels, and encourage them to collect them all.   Those who collect all of the icons will be exceptional, and are certain to earn scholarship opportunities into our nation's most coveted schools for art and design.

If you are an art educator in Henrico County, and are interested in helping us develop and refine this idea into a county-wide game system, please reach out and collaborate with us to amplify the incentives among the young artists of our county.

NGA 2015
On Wednesday, April 1st, DRHSART students will be visiting the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. This trip will allow the students the chance to see, in person, the artists and artwork that we have studied in class this year. Additionally, we will be combining our trip with AP European History classes taught by another teacher at Deep Run to encourage cross-curriculum learning. We plan on having a great day!

Parents—please contact me at [email protected] with any questions and/or if you may be interested in traveling with us as a chaperone or as a guest.  If you have not been to the NGA in a while, it would be a wonderful way to spend your day!

Not only will the students have the opportunity to see the permanent collection of our nation and some of the world’s best artwork, but they will also get to see special traveling exhibits that are currently on display. Once we arrive at the museum, the students will be broken into groups of five. To ensure safety, each group will have at least one student with a cell phone, and will be required to meet at check points throughout the day. No group of students will be permitted to leave the grounds of the National Gallery at any time.

**There is a gift shop at the gallery that has all things “art”!  If your student would like to purchase some items, we will be stopping there on our way out.  Please have them bring cash for those items as well. **

AGENDA
7:30 am: Departing from the Gym side of DRHS

10:15 - 12:00 pm: Students are on their own to explore.

12:00 - 12:30 pm: Lunch in the Cafeteria.  They will need to bring cash for the cafeteria (which has amazing food!), but they are welcome to pack a lunch if they choose.

12:30 - 3:30 pm: Students are on their own to explore.

2:00 pm: Departure to return to DRHS

4:00-4:15 Arrive back at DRHS

Your student attending the field trip MUST have their permission forms signed and returned along with a check made payable to DRHS for $25 by Friday, March 13th.  Space is limited, and only the first 80 art students to bring in their check and signed forms will be able to attend.  The permission form is available for download at the top of this blog entry.

Matt Lively to visit DRHSART

When:  March 26th at 2:30 pm
Where:  Room A12

About the Guest Speaker
I cannot think of a more iconic artist of RVA than Matt Lively.  Matt is a Richmond native, and has become one of the most prominent creative voices in the Richmond Art scene.  He has given lectures about his work since DRHSART was established, and has inspired countless students in that time.

Matt Lively Biography:
I am an artist living in Richmond, Virginia. I work in a 130 year old barn that is close to my family. A lot of things get made in the barn and some of it is shown nationally and internationally. When not in the studio, I teach at VCU and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

I make images that suggest a story without a beginning or end. Learning to stop before the painting reveals too much is the most delicate aspect of my process.

It is a real privilege to make a living doing this job. I have high standards - sometimes I hit them and sometimes I don't. I do not consider being overly precious beneficial for my work. I am consistent, work hard and do everything that I know to do to improve but, I allow things to happen naturally while painting. I avoid pretentiousness by working quickly and knowing that my methods and materials are smarter than me.

All Students will need laptops and chargers for exams.

This exam will tie together the many themes we have discussed this year in the class.
Each part of your exam will be posted on your Weebly Blog for this class.  For those students who are not up to speed with Weebly, please take the time to view this tutorial before the day of the exam:  Creating a blog

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part One:  Art Advocacy Essay  (50%)
Blog Entry:  The first portion of your exam will require you to craft a well-written, succinct, and personal blog entry about the importance of art in education.  This blog entry should be titled "Art Advocacy".

The blog entry should be written from personal experience and should also briefly address the research of Sir Ken Robinson (discussed in class on multiple occasions this year).

View these YouTube links to better inform your essay:
Do Schools Kill Creativity
Changing Education Paradigms

Be aware of your spelling and grammar as you write. Blog entries should be a minimum of three paragraphs, and should be thoughtfully organized. It is highly recommended that you brainstorm and pre-write first.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part Two:  Artist Research Reflection (50%)
Create a blog entry about the artists you studied this semester.  Your blog entry must include at least one image of each artist's trademark works, and at least one link to credible information about him or her.

As you write, describe the style of the artist's work with detail.  You should also discuss the time in which the artist worked and the artistic movement of which the artist was a part. Excellent essays will reference specific works by the artist, and have meaningful and personal commentary about the work.

Blog Entry:  The first portion of your exam will require you to craft a well-written, succinct, and personal blog entry about what you have learned because of art.  This blog entry should be titled "What Art has taught Me".

Be specific as you write, and don't only write about the literal lessons we have covered.  Think philosophically, and describe how art has changed your awareness and your understanding about your own creativity.  As you write, be aware of your spelling and grammar. Blog entries should be a minimum of three paragraphs, and should be thoughtfully organized. It is highly recommended that you brainstorm and pre-write first.

Part Three:  Describe Your Mashup
Create a separate Blog Post titled
"MASHUP THOUGHTS"

We have just been given a new assignment that was produced through the random chance of your lottery numbers.  This project will require a LOT of planning and thinking prior to diving in.  For this portion of the exam, I want to read a thoughtful blog post about how you might be able to solve the creative problem that was given to you by chance with your lottery numbers.  Discuss how you are planning to attack the problem, describe multiple possible solutions.

EXAM
DESCRIPTION

All Students will need laptops and chargers for exams.

Part One:  Complete Website (50%)

The first part of your exam includes having an up-to-date website with all of the following criteria in place:

All websites must have a links for the following:

Portfolio | Sketckbook | Blog

Below is a detailed description of what is needed for each section of your site.  For those of you who want to see an example of a student website that is exemplary, take a peek at some of the featured websites by current and past students on the drhsart site.  He has a very thorough and complete site, and even went beyond the minimum requirements to make it more professional.

Portfolio Link:
Your site should contain a link to a photo gallery of at least each work of art you've created this year, including summer work.   For the small for the "two-weeks 10 works" assignment, you only need to have your top 3 works per critique.

Sketchbook Link:
You should have a link to a photo gallery containing a  minimum of 5 sketchbook pages.  These pages can contain sketches, brainstorming, or artist studies.

Blog:
This link should include reflection entries from each of the critiques we have had this year,  with the most recent being at the top of your blog list:

All entries should contain an images of your most work and a reflection about your process, how it was received at critique, the most helpful feedback from your peers, and where you plan to take your work next.  This is an ongoing assignment that should be completed at the end of each critique we have.  Being self reflective is essential.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part Two:  Artist Research Reflection (30%)
Create a blog entry for each of the artists you studied this semester.  Your blog entries must include at least one image of each artist's trademark works, and at least one link to credible information about him or her.

As you write, describe the style of the artist's work with detail.  You should also discuss the time in which the artist worked and the artistic movement of which the artist was a part. Excellent essays will reference specific works by the artist, and have meaningful and personal commentary about the work. Additionally, I want to read about how the artists have influenced your own work.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part Three:  Artist Statement (20%)
This part of the exam requires you to create an artist statement that summarizes the ideas and content you've been working through this year.  Your statement should be posted on your website as it's own blog entry titled "Artist's Statement".   Below is a cheesy, but helpful link to a guide for writing an artist statement.

DRHSART Senior Exhibition Series Kicks off Tonight!!

As some of you may already know, the DRHSART program features senior student exhibitions in our gallery hall each month from December until June.  This month, we are highlighting three of our most talented students.  We will be having our openings for this exhibition on both Thursday and Friday of this week from 5pm until 7pm.  Refreshments and music will be provided.

About the Artists:

Picture
Joanna Gray is an incredibly technical painter, whose portraits earned her significant scholarship money to attend the 2013 SCAD pre-college summer program.  She is tremendously talented, and attended the CFA for her freshman year before deciding that she would stay at DRHSART.  Her technique is original, and she is absolutely unafraid to invent new ways to use her media. She sees the details that other students simply don’t take the time to notice, and it is that careful attention to detail that sets her and her work apart. I cannot wait to see what career path she takes, and I know that whatever it is she will find tremendous success.

Picture
Jinny Kang is as close as one can get to being a "Renaissance girl".  She excels in all that she does,  and is an instrumental leader in my classroom.  She leads through her unparalleled work ethic, her empathy for her classmates, and her ability to give honest feedback about the work of her peers.  This summer, she was selected to attend the month-long Governor’s program for Visual Art at Radford University, where her artistic confidence was taken to a whole new level.  She has been attending figure drawing classes at the Visual Arts Center, and has also been a part of a portfolio development program in Washington D.C. each Saturday for the past few months.  Her dedication is simply outstanding, and I couldn’t be more proud of her, not just as an artist, but also as a whole-hearted young adult.

Picture
Alex Turner is, by far, the best photographer our program has ever produced.  I wish we could take credit for his genius, but in all honesty….  we just can’t.  Alex learns what he needs to know by paying attention, asking questions, and digging for the information he wants.  Last summer, Alex attended the pre-college program at the Parsons New School for Design in NYC.  He left Richmond one person, and returned from NYC a completely different person. The new Alex is 100 percent himself, full of creative confidence, and has stepped up as a leader in our program.

His images are mysterious, technical, and explore abstract narratives that required the viewers to fill in the blanks.  Nothing Alex creates will ever spoon-feed his audience.  His work invites the viewers to do some work of their own, and that is exactly why his images are so engaging.  I have very high expectations for him in this year's Scholastic Art Competition, and I am confident that he will receive plenty of scholarship offers to some of our nations top-ranked art schools.
